I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

GM = sucks - engine tear-down - intake manifold gasket

Post by robry » August 15, 2004

so my intake manifold gasket finally went. Started leaking a lot of coolant out the sides between the block and the intake manifold. Good ol' GM screwed up the design of the engine and didn't add enough bolts. Leaving the gasket under a lot of pressure. Here's how far I got it torn down yesturday.

its a grand am gt, with the 3400 v6. its actually simple. pushrod technology is easy.

I just busted a bolt in the rocker arm though. so now I need to order a new one. fk!

what year did they change to the 3400? my senoir project was a teardown, rebuild of the 3100, pretty similar engines. sure there wasnt a recall on it? my moms 01 gran prix gt (with the 3800) got recalled for the intake mani, replaced it and a bunch of other stuff ($800 worth of stuff) for free, so i would check to see if you got recalled too (kinda late to check tho)

nope, the 3400 never had any recalls for it, atleast not in the grand am, similar problem. its a pain in the ass. grand am GT != grand prix gt

the 3400 is a 60degree v6, the 3800 is a 90 degree v6, totally different motors. the 3100 is basically the same. I have to find a rocker arm for mine now :( pisses me off. my torque wrench wasn't working properly (go figure) and so I busted the bolt off in the head. now I have to get an easy out and a rocker arm. GAY!

it can be a bitch, if my stupid ass wouldnt have fucked up that bolt I would be done reassembling it today, now I've got to get another rocker arm and get the bolt either drilled and retapped or helicoiled
