Hell-o my thejdm brethren. Anybody out there have a link, or access to a guide on pulling a B-series to replace pistons. I still have my PR4 pistons in my B16 from when I had turbo. That's great, but running 8.6:1 compression on your daily sucks ass. I'm getting the parts together to pop in some 81.5's and since I'll have the head off as well, some honing and cams. Because it's expensive as hell to have a shop do this, I'm going to do it myself. I've never pulled an engine before, but am mechanically inclined enough to do so. However, I need something to tell me about all the 'little' not mentioned, but real important steps when reassembling my block after I get it back from machining. If someone has a link to a page online, or if you have a Helms manual you could copy the pages from that would be awesome. I know there are a lot of board members who do this stuff all the time, and any help is appreciated. |

While I'm at it. Will the CTR pistons (PCT) change the stroke? I'm pretty sure my rods are still stock, and I hear you have to mill them 1mm for the CTR pistons. The stroke would change correct? To what.... USDM B16 block & head btw |

Sorry...I could probably find this myself but does anyone know off the top of their head what the main difference between the PCT & P30 pistons are? The JDM B16A & B. The dome is much higher on the PCT's correct? |

As far as pistons go, I believe its the doming that is different, hence the higher CR. Not too positive though as i'm a D-Series guy. Are you going with OEM rod/main bearings, or aftermarket? Make sure you use assembly lube when installing the bearings, proper torque specs on all your bolts, and I suggest you double check the cylinders after getting it back from the machine shop.. They do make errors, i've seen it happen a few times, you don't want to piston slap your brand new engine! |

I was even thinking of just buying a used block to use. I think I got all the info I need, I'm still kind of worried about P2V contact/clearance. I still don't know if the CTR pistons change stroke. Or is that's the reason you have to mill the rod. |

the pistons dont change the stroke only the rods and the crank shaft. what will happen is the CTR pistons will increase the compression alittle. changing the head gasket for something thinner will also yeild more compression or switching to something thicker to drop compression alittle. the CTR is basically a destroked ITR made for the Civic chassis which focused on corners rather then power. even the head has a different valve seat angle in the Type R heads VS the norm, 45 vs 60. tossing CTR pistons into a motor is something you have to be careful with as you can get valve slap very easily. youd be better off with ITR pistons IMHO. |

^^ Not necessarily true. Technically pistons can *change* the stroke because of a larger dome. However, the distance the piston travels is the same, so some could argue stroke has not been changed. Def. not putting ITR's in. CTR's will give me better compression & I'm only boring 20 over to give myself 81.5. If I put in ITR's I would lose compression over the stock rate. B18C5 stroke=87.2mm B16A2 stroke=77mm ITR pistons have to be modified much more than CTR's. All you have to do is mill the rod with CTRs to avoid P2V contact... I have most of the info I need...I'm still just looking for the little things that people know about that aren't generally mentioned. |

from a mechanical point of view i dont see how the piston being different would physically change the stroke. not exactly sure what part of the rod your going to mill thats going to make the CTRs work but i hope it all works out for you. |

Because the rod is wider on B16A's, you have to shave 1mm from the sides |
