Please can someone tell me what the item highlighted in the picture below is?

What does it do?

I ask this (silly) question because one morning as I was warming my car up.

I clearly saw flashing gold sparks coming out. (The sparks are highlighted in yellow)

Is that normal? The reason I opened the bonnet was to find out why my rev meter was jumping about. The engine block was shacking vigorously.

its the dizzY! Might wanna get a new cap and rotor. See if that fixes the spark issue
