opening a shop?

As of right now im a senior in high school graduating with my certificates as an A&P mechaninc (plane mechanic) what i plan to do is go to college while working in an airport to save up up money to open up a shop with lets say 3 stands and a dyno and maybe have some certifications to sell import jdm stuff. what do i need to open up a shop other then the obvious... MONEY

money and more money. In ground lifts are expensive and dyno's are even more expensive. Other than the normal business licenses, and legal red tape certificates for your local area; good connections wouldn't hurt either.

Lots of money, and get some support, maybe do work out of your job, and do the best possible work you can, so when you start up a shop, you'll have people to back your work. Dyno's are like $75,000 from what i heard, so you better get some strong credit before you try to take out the loan. Also make sure you have some security (cameras, etc). And keep your shop clean, that makes a good impression. As always, make sure you do the best work you can, dont half ass shit, because thats what you'll be known for then.

One thing I'm not sure if anyone mentioned is Location. Yea, money is important, but IMO Location is just as important. You can put all the money in the world into a shop and unless it's in a good location it's money wasted. And I'm not just talking about being on a busy corner or area, I mean being in the right type of City mainly. Take Milwaukee for example. HORRIBLE place to open a shop. Why? Well weather for one, BUT the mindset of people here is not towards quality parts.

Cheap, Cheap, Cheap. Now just and hr south in Chi, it's a completely different world. Quality, quality, quality

(keep in mind I'm speaking in general both for mIlwaukee and Chicago)

I planned on opening a shop in Milwaukee...I realized it was a mistake and glad I never went through with it. Maybe later in life a shop in Chi may be a posssiblity, but the drive would kill me. Alos the market is pretty flooded down there.

Come to N.Y. and open a shop in the cuse... We are always lookin for a good JDM spot to hold down, We really dont have a REAL shop, mostly JDM related around here that i can think of, i know some of the MCM boys might know more about this than me u could ask them, and if your as serious as you sound, i think a lot of people here will love it man.

Not only is location and type of parts important, but you have to think of what is going to separate you from the competition.

Parts make money, but you have to sell more and more. Customer Service is a huge part of what shop I choose.

Example: Hybridynamics. They're awesome guys, and the first time I dealt with Jay and Eric is when I swapped my car and accidentally switched two injector wires. Jay took care of it in no time and knows his stuff. So does Eric considering that I called when my main relay was clicking...over the phone he knew that it was the 10mm ecu ground under the intake manifold because it happened to him before. They know their stuff, and aren't just out there slinging parts. They're also super cool to hang out with. They're not thieves like alot of other places.

With the industry blowing up like it has lately there's alot of "shops" jumping on the bandwagon. The only ones that are going to survive though are the ones that are a whole package. Depending on only selling short ram intakes and springs isn't going to keep your head above water. Service...quality service...is what keeps it alive.
