Post subject:  New Street Racing Laws

A House committee Thursday created a bill that would upgrade the charge for drag racing to a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by fines of up to $1,000 and a year in jail - a move they intend to serve as a deterrent to kids who gun their cars down country roads or through marked courses.

It's already a second-degree misdemeanor to drag race, punishable by fines between $250 and $500 and up to 60 days in county jail. Under the proposal, officials would also seize cars used in drag races.

Anyone charged with drag racing twice in a five-year span would face a third-degree felony, including penalties of up to five years in state prison and maximum fines of up to $5,000.

The bill that cleared the House Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee specifies two types of drag racing - side-by-side races or time trials around a marked course.

"We have a serious problem out here with our children," said Rep. Sandra Adams, R-Orlando. "We have a nice country road that people seem to like to race down."

A similar bill (SB 2472) is already moving through the Senate.

Under this proposed legislation, get convicted of drag racing in Florida, they'll sieze your car, put a first-degree misdemeanor on your record, fine you $1,000 and possibly put you in jail for a year

so more or less what the last sentence says is if you built up your car in your parents garage their house is up for grabs by the state. I think if I were any of you in florida I'd get the fucking word out to EVERYONE what kind of bullshit law your lawmakers are passing... and maybe have some influential people pass the word on to their congressman that they won't be up for re-election if they don't do somethinb about it?

oh ps: thought about this as well, if you took your car to tires plus and they put on new tires for you, they could repot the tires plus too ;-) I think all the car shops in town might want to do something about this as well. I'm dead fucking serious, the way they wrote that law, fucking honda could be in a lawsuit for making the car and "aiding" in the crime.

Ok. I know that street racing claims lives. I know that it puts alot of people in harm's way.

My point is this...Is it really going to deter kids from street racing? How are they going to determine that it is in fact a race if they don't see the two start? Who are they to say that traffic isn't just moving fast on the highway, etc.?

I'm not saying that the law is bullshit, because street racing does need to be watched for, but the punishment is definitely bullshit. Years for street racing? Holy shit. I know of a local guy who RAPED a 12 year old and he's still walking the streets.

Justice is fucking stupid.

That's what I'm saying. People kill and rape and get five years.

Someone does over 100mph side by side with another car and gets at least a year? Bullshit.
