I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

Registering your car in a different state??

Post by Bennett @ ESG » July 14, 2005

Has anyone ever done this? My brother is buying a house in Oregon, he says if I want to register a car there go ahead. What details would be involved with this? What if I get pulled over in Cali with OR plates. Would I just say that I lived in Oregon for a little bit? Would they make me register it here? Could this drastically change my insurance? Im sure I would have to drive to Oregon of course to do smog, but that isn't a huge problem.

How old are you? You could say you live in OR most of the year, so you registered your car there. I register my car "up north" to be exempt from smog, but thats on a little lower level, but thast what I tell em. Only thing is, you'd probobly have to get a OR licence to make it more realistic?

see the only trouble you would run into is if you were to get pulled over for any random driving violation in cali, they would ask why you have oregon plates with a cali license. Typically when you move to a new state you have a certain amount of time to get new plates, so that could be a problem for you. Why would you want out of state plates anyway?

I'm almost 22. I looked around and I think you guys are all right. you have 2 months to get it registered in the state you are employed in. I would definitely have to get a OR license as well. This isnt looking too good.. :(

Worried about your smog? Three options:

1) Keep the stock motor, swap it at time of smog.
2) Buy another car same as yours, swap vin plates and take that car to smog.
3) Get friends with a smog guy and slip him some cash.

Or move outta CA :P

Theres one more option you forgot tenchu, Option 4) Join the military, then you wont have to register your car in another state. How long do you plan on staying in cali at one point in time? Its diff from state to state but if you only stay in a certain state for a small amount of time you dont have to register your car there.
