anyone ever import a car from japan?

Ok so i had thought aboutn importing a supra several years ago found an exporter had a shipping company etc and just thought there was too much money to leave out there with all of the problems that could arise, so i have found a place who sells to dealers over there thru a friend who is big into the import scene he has a skyline he imported so i can get a 2000 type R for under half what the places that export from japan that sell to the public sall cars for, its not much more than a 2000 regular hatch civic cost over here so im thinking about buying it alot less $ than the supra was, so has anyone went thru this?
a few ?'s i have
1- emissions are there regulations i have to make to the car for it to get thru customs
2- i live in alabama so we dont have emissions checks, whenu bring a car in from out of state, i bought an IS300 in from tennessee you have to go to the courthouse to have it inspected even new cars for roadworthiness, blinkers headlights etc in working order it takes about 10 mins where i live

so anyone got any advice etc for me?

well i know people make a business of this and i know it is possible but there are issues with crash test data
