i started playing around with the navigation again today after work and i finally figured out a good bit of the wiring. alot easier then i thought actually hahaha. so playing around with it and it always pops this message up and the only words i can understand are 'CD' hahah so anyways i pulled the cd out and noticed its scrached on the bottom pretty bad. i did the usual wipe off and stuck it back in. it started spinning inside the unit and i got a new menu on the screen now. WOW! haha finally some progress!! it pulled up a GPS sat. menu showing the cordnates of the sats. crazy. so i backed out of the menu and i got that CD notice again.. so im starting to think its a read error. wiped the cd back off and poped it in. waited a bit and up poped a new screen! street maps! i can browse around the street maps and put little checkered flags everywhere haha. and it pops up showing a lil house (current position im guessing) its all over in japan. haha its weird looking.. so i tried to zoom in and i got another read error. im thinking i need to take a disc doctor to the cd to fix all the tiny scraches and swirls then im going to try this again. anyone ever had any + or - things happen with a disc doctor? im going to try wiring up the media box and tape deck today along with some speakers. im gonna try to get some sound out of the unit so i can hook up my ipod to the media box so i can finally install the unit for good. all the heater/blower conrtrols work, the hazard works and the unit powers up and i can run around some of the menu's. i have to rewire the rear defrost button for that to work, shouldnt be too bad. |

well...i have personally never used a disc doctor...but i have heard many myths about toothpaste working alot better and cheaper than CD repair kits....so i searched and found a link. Recovering scatched CD's | Hardwaresecrets.com you may want to give it a shot. |

welp i tried the q-tip and toothpaste trick. it seemed like it helped a bit. so i figured i would try something else then. got out the bottle of carnuba car wax and tried that. welp... it works freaking flawless now. the abrasion in the wax helped clean up some of the scratches and left a nice slick sheen on the bottom of the cd. soon as i put the cd in now it boots right up, no hesitation what so ever. i can scroll around the maps and the cd's loads instantly. i love it! now im gonna try and convert this system to US maps. |
