I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

Listen Up wrote:To be honest, whether or not you're on the track vs. daily driving, I wouldn't get anything other than Zeals for the EVO.
They are truly one step above the others when it comes to quality, and of course longevity.

16K 14K on Zeal S6 felt like I was driving an LS, with sway bars as thick as my ankles; smooth as butter ride, with zero lean.

Well first of all the Zeals are almost 3 grand so that is just insane. Secondly, 16k front 14k rear spring rates on the street??? Damn that would ride like a school bus it would be so stiff. Even the BC Racing streets are 8k front and 6k rear and are said to be way stiffer than stock which is pretty stiff to begin with. I dont know what to do, but I got a lot of time to save up for the cash and research the crap out of this. I am only trying to spend about $1,300 max though at this point.

Actually a place I order from sometimes that have very fair prices has the Zeal Function XS for $2,440, the Function X for $2,855, and the Super Function R for $4,880!!! Damn those are expensive! Not anytime soon for me.....lol

(Again, this site will not let me edit previous posts. It is forcing me to be a post whore.)

You're not listening. The spring rate has nothing to do with the ride quality; it's the valving of the shock itself that's going to give you that bouncy feeling.
Granted, different springs will have a different ride, but most of it is due to the actual coilover valving.

Zeals are on another level compared to Tein and BC, therefore the super high spring rate is still smoother than the puny 8k/6k. Trust me you're going to want something with a higher rate than that, unless you think tein Flexs are a good setup..

BTW; who the hell pays retail on coilovers?

I know how coilovers work. I am an engineer. And those prices are not retail prices. That is just one shop I checked, Gruppe-S. Hey if you can find me a set of Zeals for a good deal I would really appreciate it and certainly take a look at them. At this point I am just looking around to see what is out there. My buddy has the Tein Flex and loves them and I have seen them go for around $1,350 which is about the max I would spend on these for a DD.

Well, whatever you decide with is your choice it's not like I can really make you decide to pay more for Zeals. You do get what you pay for, though.
People "love" their Tein Flex until they realize there is worlds of better suspension out there. You just haven't experienced them yet.

^Agreed, but performance is proportional to cost and I am not looking for a top of the line coilover here. And I agree with you that valving affects ride quality but I also disagree that spring rates don't. The whole point of the spring is to absorb impacts from bumps and the dampers, well....damper the vibration the spring would experience if undamped. I know you know this, but I am just saying.

Again, if you know a good place to look for Zeals that would have a great price well under MSRP, please hook me up.

I will also say I am not going to buy anything till this winter and isntall next spring. So I have a lot of time to shop around for best prices and more importantly, research, research, research. :)

So in short I am not disagreeing with you that Zeals and Ohlins and Penskes and pieces like that are the shit, I am just saying they are out of my budget and I really dont need something like that for daily driving and weekend abuse on the mountain roads. Now if I autox or track the car I would def look into them. So what do you guys suggest for a good entry level or mid-level coilover?

Well, mid level, entry level, competition level, is the same for me.
It's either do it the "right" way, the first way, or just don't do it until you can.

I guess I value suspension more than modifications to the engine, or even a swap. I'll take a stock D16Z6 with a full suspension setup, than a K20R with some Tein Flexs and bs.
I value suspension more than a lot of people out there, which is probably why I cannot understand for the life of me, why you would buy a swap, build the motor, turbo it/etc and then go out and get some flexs or f2s when these coilovers are KNOWN to blow up at the track / under harsh driving conditions.

I don't know I think I'm beating a dead horse so I'm going to stop posting in here..

BTW don't get me wrong I'm not in a better financial situation than you are, by far seeing as you have an EVO and I've been through a CRX, an "EG" and I have an 05 Civic that I pay 150/month for.
Half of your car build up is knowing who to go to for parts..

I just can't justify dropping a ton of cash on grade A track suspension for a daily driver. Just as I cant see putting a 35R and meth on a daily driver. Sure you would have kick ass suspension or for my other example, around 550+whp but do you really need that for a dd? It's like putting 20s on an off road rig just to say you didnt cut corners when buying wheels for your rig when you really dont need dubs and they are completely impractical. Maybe that analogy is a strech but I think you guys see what I mean. Basically the stock EVO suspension is sick and the tanabe GF-210 springs I have on there now are pleanty fine for what I am doing with the car. However the stock struts (and their valving) are not designed for these spring rates and drop and of course will wear out in time. Also, when I roll on some 255/35R18s I will want to go a tad lower and I also want camber adjusment as well as something that wont leak oil and wear out like my stockers no doubt will here eventually. I will say that I am surprised to see the Tein Flex spring rates are softer than I thought. And I dont know how I feel about the BCs as they have yet to be proven in time. But in the end it is like I said, I just need something that is at least as good as the stock suspension as far as ride quality and handling with camber and ride height adjustment and the peace of mind to know they will last for a long time. I am open to suggestions and appreciate your suggestion of the Zeals, but they are just too much cash for me.
