Anybody know the implications of getting a FULL CF roof? you know, CRX HF roof, no holes for plugs etc... to build a BMW M3 CSL style roof...?
I need to know stuff about flexing etc... the roof itself is just a matter of saving up enough money to get it made and installed...
I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

Real carbon fiber is layed with a special mix of resin's and vacuumed together usually in an autoclave. This pulls the layers of carbon together very tight. This is one way of doing it. A mold will be very expencive to make. The mold is also usually injected with a filler that lays in the pits and between the strads of carbon and give it a perfectly smooth texture. However, this will leave your roof piece black or grey, and not have the "carbon" LOOK on the outside. This is probably not what your looking for if you want the M3 style roof.
For a roof I would suggest a sandwich panel. A sandwich panel comprises a core material (honeycomb, foam, wood, etc.) sandwiched between two lightweight facing skins (Carbon fiber, fiber glass, etc.). The core material separates the facings and transfers loading into them for outstanding strength to weight properties. The thicker the core, the higher the stiffness and strength of the panel - for minimal weight gain. Doubling the thickness of the core increases the stiffness of the panel by a factor of 7, but only adds a minimal amount of weight.
Good luck! If you just want the look of carbon, I would suggest just getting your roof wrapped in carbon!

no it's NOT just about the looks ... I want the real thing...
A UK company is doing hoods allready, in RACE SPEC CF... so not some idiotic VIS-racing-style-CF-layer-on-a-fibre-everything-else...
And that's what got me thinking (well, that and the fact that I have two CRX VT's in my driveway, both with rust around the holes where the sunroof drains exit the car...)
