I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

why does the sohc hate me?

Post by Zero » January 15, 2007

well i went for a drive and im almost sure that i spun a rod bearing in this engine now too... i felt a loss in power and slowed down and went hmm... what the hell is wrong... lifted the hood... sounded fine... revved it and found some clacking... of course i went oh shit no oil... checked it and sure enough no oil... -_- ... i had a quart so i put it in and found the nearest store driving REALLY slow and not going over 2k rpms... got oil and its still making the sound... so i took my time getting it home... and it sounded like it was trying to get worse... im not too happy about this but its not so bad as im sure out here in Vegas i can find another crank and rod bearings in decent shape for a decent price... that and i can do the work myself compared to before where i HAD to get the motor changed out so i could get here... damn i wish people would have bought some of the stuff ive been selling so i had the cash for this crap... looks like my car is out of comission til i get this crap fixed... but lol i do have another vid clip but this ones better and prolly the reason i spun the bearing... >_< ... its will be under my post in multimedia when i up load it...

but for some reason these engines cant hold oil very well... i even put that thickener crap and it all burnt off... i have no oil leaks so it had to have burnt off... damn it and i had a gut feeling that i needed to check my oil... the check engine light wouldnt have helped only cause its been on due to my o2 sensers... this is what i get for not doing what im supposed to...

*edit* heres the link to it so you can hear the clips... let me know what you think of it all even if the car is now DOA...

the sohc d16y7's are notorious for spinning rod bearing #3 at around 120k if oil matiance wasn't kept up. my y7 did that. so i built a y8 and dropped it in.

get a cheap ebay rebuild kit. rebuild it, and baby the shit out of it, new oil ever 2-3k and check it atleast once a week to make sure its not burning off. I bet if you would have noticed the oil level going down before it was GONE, this wouldn't have happened. Sorry to hear bro!

That definatley sucks man, sorry to hear. Im not quite understanding how your engine is swallowing 3.5 quarts of oil if its not leaking or smoking? My Y7 doesnt really eat any oil after 312k miles.

as tenchu suggested look into a rebuild kit, having the bottom end rebuilt isnt as much as you think, it just so happens that people say "since the engine is apart, why not add xxxx" (insert performance part x). If you had plans to swap, now is the time to do it. If not, then get the rebuild kit, and while you are at it, get some higher compression pistons, in relative terms, d-series stuff is cheap, I would bet that without new pistons you could rebuild the bottom end for under $500. good luck! :)
