yeah jdm, what is your thoughts on those 3 letters in the car scene today?

from when i started to build my car till now i have noticed a HUGE change in the industry. alot of the newer companies comming out doing the 'knock off parts' and such.

im not going to say im an OG in this scene infact i have been following the JDM scene since 95 and i wasnt even able to drive, i did fall in love with a show scene crazy kits and all of that garbage when i first picked up my car in 1999. but by mid to late 1999 and early 2000 is when i put together thejdm.com and starting falling into this 'scene' i feel i got into the scene before the insane hype but im not going to get into that because its not important.

is your take on 'jdm' clean style? buying parts from japan? building a monster motor? lets get a good discussion in this thread, there is no wrong answers i just want to know whats going on in peoples heads when the word JDM is mentioned.

and here is my take on the term. when i think JDM anymore im thinking TREND. jdm is a trend and there is no if ands or buts in my book, to you it might be different but anymore jdm is a trend. its not about the parts from japan anymore. because the person who isnt afraid to spend the money and buy the advans over the rota's are going to get the same reaction from the people who are not the TRUE enthusiast. To me the REAL lovers of the honda/toyota/nissan scene is not afraid to go out and get what they want. they will not quit untill they have what they want. if it takes 5 years to save up for that one part then so be it. they will not settle for bottom of the barrel. when i think JDM i do think japanese parts and i see a bunch of these people picking up these knockoff parts that are NOT EVEN MADE IN JAPAN and still calling there car JDM it just sets me down and makes me laugh ant where this scene is going. its in such a hype now that these companies are making knockoff OEM parts as well as aftermarket and the people are still buying them up because of the price.. the quality might not be there but the price is right. to me they are not the TRUE enthusiast. they are in it for a LOOK not the function or quality. you could argue quality to an extent and im not saying all the japanese parts are of the greatest quality. but compared to alof of these knockoff parts the quality is far superior.

this thread might spark some hate/anger in some peoples eyes but PLEASE remember this is your personal opinion i do not need this thread getting out of hand or it will get closed. i just want to hear other peoples take on the scene!

jdm = the three letters that people use to catalog'ize' their car according to one brand that they like.....spoon'd out cars, mugenized cars, js'd out cars...blah blah blah..i think its all gay....i like taking a mix of random parts that i personally like and i put it into a blender and throw it all in my car....thats why many people think i just threw in a buncha random parts into my car. what people dont understand is that mix of random ass parts creates something that is different and un-catalog'ized', which sets my car apart from the rest..

jdm has become trendy where many companies destroy the market by creating 'copies'.....once these knock offs hit the shelves, they devalue the harder to find stuff that was once highly prized. this goes form wheels to exterior mods like lips, wings etc.....rocking fake parts is like having your girlfriend rock fake gucci or louis vuitton..... =(

the term JDM is ,as well are all aware, Japanese Domestic Market so imho you can rock it JDM or rock it the JDM style key word is "style".

a real JDM tuner goes and gets the rare parts from Japan or even the car itself and tunes it in a clean and tasteful way... a JDM Style tuner buys the parts that look good on that car relative to the Real JDM tuner... usually the latter person is one who wont stay in the scene for longer then 3-5 years unless they start buying the real parts and become a Real JDM tuner...

people who rock JDMS (Japanese Domestic Market Style) usually do it to fit in or who dont have the finances to rock the real thing nor want to wait for their build and want it done now... or dont want the real parts to be damaged so they think its a waste of money... but if you consider it a waste of money to buy the parts that means youve already told yourself that your going to mess them up weither it be your driving style, lack of appretiation for your car or road conditions... nothing is wrong with you wanting to not mess something up that youve spent that much cash on but that doesnt mean you cant buy it and rock it only during the few times you want to show off...

JDMS tuners who claim they are real parts or make them look like the real deal are some of the worst in the scene as they really dont appretiate the parts they are trying to mimic.

either way im not for or against the jdm scene but the True JDM Tuners are the ones who will get the most respect and the spot light that some of the tuners look for when building a car... that and you can sell the real parts for alot more if you ever decide to get out of the scene...

Well, maybe not rice so to speak, but definately a trend that's becoming way too hyped up.

Anymore ... i'm not worried about whether something on my car is JDM or whatever ... but it just so happens that most of the things that fit my bill are of JDM descent. Yes i have the JDM front end, Yes I have the JDM recaros and the list goes on ... but i didn't buy them BECAUSE they were JDM. I bought the front end, for example, because i like the way it looks (and because it bas basically screaming my name locally) as opposed to the usdm front end. As far as my seats, i went with them for the same reason... I like the way they look and being an OEM part, they'll offer the comfort i want. If i would have found the USDM SRD's for the same price, they'd be at my door instead.

I think JDM is mostly a 'show' scene. When it comes to anything performance-wise, i could care less what it's origin is... As long as it serves my purpose, and serves it well ... it'll go in/on.

There are a lot of things in the jdm 'scene' that i find pointless and far fetched, but to each his own. No hate coming from here.

I noticed it to be bad locally when some locals started asking if random (non-jdm) parts were 'JDM', or asking if they should get something 'JDM' as opposed to something else.... or asking if the motor in one of our cars were the 'JDM' version.

I sat back and watched it all go down ... but it kinda sickens me ... Something that was once a 'holy grail' of the honda/toyota/nissan scene is being blemished by people who are simply uneducated.

And honestly - you can't blame THEM for being uneducated... because a lot of this sort of education falls into place by accident... I've learned more in the past few years by not even trying to learn anything new, than i did when i was just getting into cars reading absolutely everything i could...

I guess now, it's just i know what to not even bother acknowledging...

but who knows, that's just my take on this whole shindig.

to me there is no single right definition to "JDM".

most people nowadays take it as Clean OEM looking cars upgraded motor and suspension wise....which for the most part is true IMO, but here in the US people have obsessed over replicating and cookie cutting it to being a car with yellow fogs, front and rear lips, window visors and a new driver badge BAM that makes your car "JDM".

i see things a little different, i buy what i like, it doesnt matter if YOU dont like it...everyone has there own taste, i see JDM being anything produce in japan for japanese brand cars....whether it be a full body kit, or valve stems...there is alot more out there than just what the kids on honda-tech do and create trends...yes i also see JDM as being a trend.

i will never say my car is "JDM" because it would be false...kinda like faking the front. my car is always going to be USDM because thats where it was produced...i may modify it with japanese parts...but when i comes down to it...it will still be USDM based in my eyes.

the rest of you may not agree with my Opinion...but that is the reality of the matter...not everyone is going to fully agree with everything you say.

jdm..clean japanese cars with japanese oem or aftermarket parts.

that is all. i ignore the trend. if a car is clean with jdm parts, then to me it's jdm.

BUT..

i refer to anything japanese as jdm. hahah.
