I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

wrx, boost lag/hesitation?

Post by .saint » July 24, 2009

i posted this on nasioc.com so here it is from there...
i dont know shit about turbos and things so :\

i picked my 06 wrx tr. up last october & a very reputable used car dealership.

had a few minor things go bad that was covered under the factory subaru warranty. when i bought the car i bought the extended zurich warranty and im guessing im going to have to use it unless this is fixable myself but here is my problem.

i use my car as a DD and i just use it to commute back and forth to work, typical driving on my way home yesterday going up a hill i hit the gas and the car started to hesitate and i had no power never went in to boost but my rpms went up pretty high.

i got to hill, i was going down so i put it in neutral i could hear a taping clicking noise when i was rolling the faster i was going the louder it was getting i got to the bottom to a stop sign and i noticed the clicking or tapping noise went away it would only happen when the car was moving. i pulled out and started to go, curious about the lag i had earlier so i slowly started on the gas, soon as i was going into boost the car would hesitate and kind of bog down so i backed off and kept it below boost the rest of the ride home.

i also notice at idle once in awhile it would kind of shake the car pretty rough at times.

the car came with an STI top mount & i noticed an HKS BOV sticker on the underside of the hood, but there was no bov it was put back to stock. im hoping this is nothing major hopefully just like a computer problem that just needs reset back to read the parts that are on the car. but i think im better off calling this zurich place and finding out where i can get this in to a shop to have them look into this. i just keep getting horror stories of me buying a lemon and something major is wrong here.

reset my ecu and it fixed the lag and not going into boost, but im still getting somewhat of a hesitation. reading about the problem on nasioc.com they said it could be an o2 sensor or a clogged cat causing the hesitation.

i pulled my top mount off today and inspected the hoses for any type of leaks, also went over all the vac lines and couldnt find anything that would be causing anything. possibly thing i might have a sensor going bad. for the simple fact that resetting the ecu helped it somewhat. so possibly it might be something electrical???

i dont know shit about turbo's or subaru's so any input is better then nothing.

check the wastegate on the turbo. Maybe it's sticking and giving you a little surge? It's still an internally gated stock turbo, correct?

The 02 sensor sounds like a good place to start for a hesitation like you describe.

Sounds like a clogged cat to me, you've got 3 (maybe 4) of them stock :/

i was looking around at some exhaust setups for the car. not sure what im looking for i like the look of canister on subaru's but i want something clean, the perrin stealth one looks legit and seems like it put down some alright numbers.

but the thing that gets me is once i reset the ecu i got back into boost, a clogged cat would still restrict it from boost even after the reset, its got to be something electrical or a sensor correct? thats what opened my eyes towards the o2. as for the hesitation that could be a clogged cat.
