I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

can't get oil pressure

Post by idreamidrive » October 17, 2009

i know this is a long shot since nobody posts here anyways.

Freshly OE Rebuilt d16y8 with new oil pump.
I have the fuel injectors unplugged and the dizzy to try to make oil pressure without starting the thing.
Been cranking on the starter for probably 4-5 minutes now without a hit of anything happening. Does it normally take this long?

I checked to make sure that the oil light sensor was plugged in.

Checked the oil level and it hasn't dropped at all.

My battery is about to die and i really don't want to burn out my starter. Can anybody help?

Just a guess - maybe it's going to take more RPM than the starter can manage to get oil into the galleys. My Miata has a real OPG and oil pressure usually shows up about 1 second after the engine fires.

YMMV.

Hey Joel, sorry I haven't called you yet. Been busy with school/work and haven't got a chance to look in to this. You mean you have low oil pressure? Or it's not reading on an oil pressure gauge? Or you want to be sure the pressure is there for a start?

When you rebuilt the D, did you do anything to the valve guides? Replace the seals?

I might be misunderstanding the question, but why don't you want to start it to idle? Will this be the first time starting it?

And remember, the oem oil pressure light won't come on until the pressure is really, really low. When you replaced the pump did you check the oil pan? Is the pickup screen or tube blocked? Or is the pump in the crankcase on D's?

this would be the first start up once i get oil pressure. i wanted to get oil pressure before i did the first start up so that i don't starve the bearings of oil since we all know that y8's suck balls for starving oil to the rod bearings.

all seals have been replaced on the motor.

i just removed the oil filter to squirt some oil down the galley but that worked to no avail. getting the car towed to work so i can rip off the oil pan and see what the heck is up. hopefuly its just that the screen on the pick up is clogged or something since i forgot to clean it.

Sounds like a good plan. Let me know if you find anything around the pan. If not, then I would retrace through the whole system. You have a gauge right?

i have a light but somewhere at work i can find a gauge to hook up.

i forgot to mention that when i pulled off the oil filter just now it was dry as a bone.

Well, that kind of narrows it down a little. Something must be up with your pick-up (clogged, or not positioned right) or maybe your sending unit.

Maybe the pump is a dud. Can you check the clearances?

update: have only pressure after fucking around with it for 3 hours. took off the pan and pick up and cleaned it out and was able to get pressure.

only thing now is that my crank sensor might have taken a shit on me, i must have not adjusted my valves correctly since they are really loud, and something is messed up with my clutch when i engage it.

hopefully nothing too major

I think I might need a valve adj. in my civic. I'm afraid to do it myself though. I have a penchant for messing things up.
