I'm excited to announce that thejdm is now updated to the latest phpbb 3.2 software. You may notice the site is now mobile friendly but with the upgrade comes some hiccups. theGarage, theGallery, theArcade are no longer supported. In due time the developers should be working to release the modifications to work on the new software. #LetsMakeForumsGreatAgain

smog was such a biatch

Post by 3rdgencrx » December 19, 2004

ok well i was putting off the whole smog thing till the last moment cause i knew somthing bad was going to happen, and it did. my car has about 220,000 mi on it and almost didn't pass last time (2 years ago). this time the smog guy says i wont pass cause i need a new o2 sensor ($200 OEM part) and a new cat $230 so after spending about $500 to smog it i feel raped.

Damn. That sucks. Don't they have a cap on what you spend to get it to pass?

I don't know about it because we don't have a full-fledged emissions program. Our county only has gas cap and visual.

All the work i had done was done at other shops cause the test only smog shops aren’t allowed to work on any cars, and aren’t even sposs to say how to make it pass. It’s a cali thing. It’s all very weak sauce!

sounds like it'd just be cheaper to find a friend who will make your car pass for a lump sum ;)

Damn. That sucks.

I know in PA if you drive it less than 5k a year then your car is exempt. It just has to pass visual.

I'd be screwed if they plugged my car in for the obd2 check.

You'd think that they would at least help you out and tell you what's wrong. Otherwise you'd be chasing a problem that you have no idea exists. I've heard garages say that a brand new car will pass a smog, but fail the obd2 check. Just depends. It's bullshit if you ask me.

Ouch, 200 for an O2 sensor? Maybe I'm just used to OBD0 O2 sensors, if there is a difference.

I'm glad my county has no emmisions testing. We did before and they got rid of it. I know the CRX wouldn't pass the visual check.

I beleive most ODB2 o2 sensors have a heating element, so they are approximately the same temperature as the exhaust gases, allowing them to work faster and adjust the engine more quickly so the car pollutes less.

My EK wouldn't pass a visual either let alone a sniffer or obd2 check. Definitely won't after I get the turbo on.

I don't think our county will ever get a full-blown emissions check because our pollution blows in from Pittsburgh. At least that's what the research has shown.
