i chose the silvia as the base car because there are a lot of skylines and emphasis on skylines over here, every man and his dog are into skylines, so i didn't want to go with the trend, therefore choosing the silvia, and went for s13 because i just like the visual appeal of them, and they are cheap leaving more money for mods.

What I want to do with the car ? Ok i'm planning to pour all my available cash into this car so it'll be my only car (at least for a few months) and will be my 'daily driver' but will also be the weekend toy as well, so will need plenty of power and speed for the occasional race.

The Skylines are popular because they are God.
Your intentions for this car are daily driver and street racer? Not to pry, but I can only assume why your license is invalid at the moment.
Just to explain to you, we in the US cannot get the S15 or Skyline, so when you, as an Aussie, say that it's too "trendy" to get a far superior car, it simply baffles us. Please.... just get an R33 GT-R and tune from there, even for your street racing and daily driving you'll much prefer it.

At this point in time, my plans are to buy the s13, when the time comes to get my license back and buy a car, if i can find an s15 for the right price, maybe i'll go with that option, but that wouldn't leave much left over for mods.

On the skyline topic, that sucks that you can't get them there, the thing is, i want something completely different, sure I could buy an R32 or R33 GTR, but it would just blend in with the rest of the skylines around here. If I wanted a different skyline, it would have to be an R34, and I can't afford one unless I get a loan (i hate loans).

Daily driver / street racer .... There is a really big performance car following where I live, and everybody brings their cars out on the weekend to show off, the odd drag race here and there is not unheard of, but because I'm putting all my money into this car, it will be driven everyday because I won't be able to afford another one to drive daily straight away.

Have you ever owned an S13 before? I can't recommend it over an S15 for a daily driver. With the S13, you said you'd have $15k US left over for mods, lots of people spend a bit of that money just to make par with the S15. You also have to keep in mind that due to the fact that the S13 is so much older than the S15, it will be tougher to work on. The interior of the S13 is laughable, but the interior of the S15 is one of my favorites, another thing to keep in mind while daily driving it. With the S15, you won't have to do too much to upgrade the brakes, something that gets pricey. My only concern would be that you may be a hard driver and could wreck the 6-speed in the S15, but that's just a detail as at a higher "PS" you would want to switch to the tougher 5-speed. These are all things that you thankfully have tons of time to think about. For me, if I could have the S15 chassis, I would without a doubt. If I didn't like Skylines (unfathomable

) I'd pick up a nice S15, tastefully mod it, and throw a little money into the suspension and get the engine opened up but running consistently and safely. I appreciate you asking us our opinions on your situation, and I'm really happy that you're listening to what we have to say. The cars that you are able to buy are simply dreams to us, this is why it's so difficult for us to understand why you'd "settle" on an S13. Good luck with your decision!

Well, I've read through this thread a little...

And let me just say this... Daily Driven + Race Car = not going to happen.

Unless you build it extremly well, and take very good care of it, and its inevitable that things are going to break seeing that it is a decade old car.

Personally, If I were in you're position and wanted an S13, I would try to pick upa low mileage, stock, straight car first off... then get suspension ( coilovers, arms, bushings, sways ) and then get a good diff, choose one based on what you want to do, drift, drag, whatever... then I would get some Z32 brakes or equivalent in aus. then just do all the maintanence work on the motor, belts, gaskets, etc.
And also get some decent gauges, egt, boost, oil press.

Then go and start trying to make some power.

Because lots of power without suspension, diff, and on a motor which you dont know in what kind of condition it is in = not fun.

But then again, if I lived in australia, I would probably have an S14, S15, or R32. Or something with an RB or 2JZ-GTE in it. But thats just me.

i think i understand what you guys are trying to say, and thanks for giving me your opinions on everything - just wanted to clear something up that keeps coming to the surface is daily + racer - of course i'm going to be involved in a few street drags, which is why i was originally asking about potential power, but it's not as if i am going to be taking my daily driver to the track on weekends. i'm going to take into consideration what yous have all said and check out some price ranges on r34s and s15s and see if i can afford to take out a loan to cover the rest of the price. i'll let yous know.
